Batteries for aviation & more

HBL Power Systems Ltd is a listed Indian company, in business since 1977, with a focus on engineered products and services.

The initial business strategy at HBL was to identify technology gaps in India and fill these by ‘indigenous efforts’. The first products selected and successfully developed were aircraft batteries – eventually leading to the company offering the world’s widest range of specialised batteries.

Expertise in batteries generated opportunities and ideas to diversify. The company moved into new businesses and markets that utilise these batteries, such as industrial electronics, defence electronics, and railway electronic signalling. Today, HBL is a leading company engaged in the manufacture of specialized batteries and DC power systems with an experience of almost three decades. The main focus of the business is on the aviation, defence, communication, industry and the railway sectors.

Recent diversification, leveraging the companies engineering strengths, has led to new businesses in precision manufacturing, spun reinforced concrete and ‘green’ technology products. The success has been built serving some of the world’s most demanding customers and applications.

HBL is based at Hyderabad, India. Its resources include a dedicated team of 2500 qualified personnel including doctorates, engineers and graduates, built-up factory space of 200,000 square metres and a wide sales & service network covering all major cities and towns in the country. The company also has manufacturing bases, marketing offices and sales agents in other countries as well.

The company has the unique distinction of being the only one in the world to have expertise in all the major battery technologies including:

* Nickel cadmium (pocket plate, fibre plate, sintered plate, sintered plate plastic bonded)
* Silver zinc (primary and secondary)
* Lead acid (VRLA, pure lead, tubular gel, low maintenance tubular), and
* Lithium (thionyl chloride, thermal and reserve).

The present turnover of HBL is US $200 million. Of this, 20% is contributed by exports to North America and Europe. Aircraft batteries form an important part of this export. HBL has a Quality Management System complying with ISO 9001:2000.

Aviation batteries

HBL is one of few companies to supply aircraft batteries in the three main technologies generally used for aircraft starting (on-board and ground):

* Lead acid – sealed maintenance free
* Nickel cadmium, and
* Silver zinc.

HBL aircraft batteries satisfy required form, fit, and function interface and environment standards of original batteries. Customised design and development is possible where volume and value are justified where ever applicable.

These batteries are approved by:

* Federal Aviation Administration (FAA, USA)
* Interstate Aviation Committee (Russia)
* European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
* Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC, India), and
* Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA, India).

HBL batteries are OEM approved for:

* Bombardier Learjet Lear 85
* Israel Aerospace Industries for Heron UAV
* LET Czech Republic for LET 410
* Zodiac Electric France for Global 7000
* HAL for LCA, and
* NAL for Saras aircraft.

HBL aircraft batteries conform to various Standards like MIL 8565, IEC 60952, MIL-PRF-81757, BS EN 2570. HBL has been supplying various aircraft batteries to customers in India, USA, Poland, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, UAE, etc. The company enjoys the confidence of numerous civilian and military customers around the world.
