Recently, the company’s smart storage solution helped an automobile spare parts manufacturer in the new brown-field expansion project to enhance their productivity. The auto spare part manufacturer has 7-8 plants situated in different areas of Maharashtra & Gujarat. While this was the mother plant, all the finished goods from different manufacturing sites was largely used here as work in process (WIP) material. The automobile spare-parts manufacturer had various challenges in its existing set-up. However, with JSS’ innovative solutions the manufacturer could increase its floor space by 30-35 per cent, freeing up additional space, adding new building while simultaneously increasing storage space by more than 300 per cent. 

 

After a brief study of the manufacturer’s existing set-up, Jay Storage Solutions sensed that the manufacturer need not go for a new set-up, but instead they can achieve their goals in this existing set-up by rearranging the floor plan, thereby material flow efficiency can be increased, and ultimately resulting in manpower reduction, increased productivity, easy access to all material, inventory visibility & better flow of goods. 

 

Before providing the solution, an in-depth study and analysis was made, in the manufacturing process, material handling flow, existing storage racking systems, inventory systems used, packing, repacking & despatch, so as to understand their needs & future goals. Together with the client, JSS identified the pain areas, movement of goods, and came up with a combination of solution.

 

The solution was indigenised for each area, eg small components storage had a very low inventory visibility, so JSS came out with a ‘multi-tier Long span shelve racking’ and installed it right at the place where it was required for consumption. For the in-process & WIP goods, which flowed from other plants was labelled and stored in ‘mobile pallet racking’ system, which not only increased their storage capacity to 250-300 per cent, but at the same time reduced manpower & increased storage & retrieval time. Other solutions for die-tools storage involved customised design of pallets proved a boon. Batch produced finished goods was stored in ‘drive-in pallet racking’ which resulted in reducing the despatch time by 50 per cent. The system helped this automobile spare parts manufacturer in easy identification of goods, easily segregate different goods, bifurcate the goods & thus increased productivity.
