Need for safety is driving material handling equipment demand

...says Manpreet Sachdeva, Founder, Elite Material Handling Company, as he elaborates on the impact of Make in India initiative and GST of logistics and warehousing sector.

How is 'Make in India' initiative aiding the growth of material handling equipment (MHE) industry?
Indian material handling industry is small, but growing at a robust pace. Lack of labour and safety requirements will drive the demand for MHE. With Make in India initiative a lot of imports from other country will be controlled and Indian industry will witness a boom. There are a lot of start up companies which are linked with it need manufacturing.

How do you catered to the warehousing sector?
We provide the total solution from start to end in loading and unloading of all products. For warehouse, the planning should start from the inception stage. Our products take care of easy movement of goods inside the warehouse space only. With our products, customers save time, money and labour.

What are the advantages of your products?
With our products, the customer is able to unload a truck in 20 minutes as compared to 2 hours earlier. Also, by using our products, accidents can be avoided.

Is India still dependent of imported technologies for material handling equipment?
India is not yet self reliant and depends on imports. Our government should offer more incentives to micro, small and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs) to make the Indian product more affordable and competitive.

Automation (especially robotics) play a big role in Material Handling & Logistics segment. Are you seeing this trend in India as well?
It will take some time in India to get the automation as the basic capital cost is expensive and labour in the country is still affordable. If the cost comes down with more players entering the market, the usages of robotics would increase.

Do you offer automated products/solution?
Yes. We do provide automated products. Most of our products are custom built and automated as per customer requirement only.

How is the demand for third party logistics (3PL) in India? What is driving the demand?
The 3PL is there in India and is driven by the automobile companies at this point of time. Third party logistics market will expand further to other sectors as the demand increases.

What are the challenges in material handling industry?
The biggest challenge is to keep on updating and offering customers cost effective solutions. Also, the industry needs to upgrade products as per customer demand.

Has introduction of GST helped the material handling & logistics sector?
Though it has helped, the industry has not picked up as expected. Indian market is yet to get use to the GST process and will take more than one year.

What are the emerging trends in logistics & warehousing sector?
Increasingly companies are realising the need to upgrade their facilities to improve productivity. We are seeing a rise in usage of automatic transport vehicle (ATV) in warehouse.

What are your growth plans for the company?
We want to offer more products at affordable cost to the industry. We aim to provide job opportunities and improve the quality of MHE in India. We will add new products in our range which will help the Indian industry grow and be at par with the world.
