UFlex Limited releases report for EPR reporting at PPRDC event

UFlex, a leading global packaging company, and the Plastic Packaging Research and Development Centre (PPRDC) joined forces to address a critical challenge in India's plastic waste management efforts: the need for accurate measurement of recycled content in packaging.

Sustainability at the Core

Ashok Chaturvedi, Chairman & Managing Director, UFlex , emphasised the company's commitment to sustainability. Highlighting UFlex's significant investments in recycling technologies, he stated their current capacity of recycling 30,000 MT of Multi-Layer Plastic (MLP) waste annually, with a target of reaching 100,000 MT globally.

Applauding Government Initiatives, Calling for Consistency

Mr. Chaturvedi applauded the Indian government's regulations on plastic waste management (PWM) and extended producer responsibility (EPR). He acknowledged these regulations as a potential game-changer for India's waste management system and a step towards a circular economy. However, he stressed the importance of consistent and accurate measurement of recycled content in packaging to ensure effective EPR reporting.

Standardisation

The event focused on a study report by PPRDC, supported by CIPET and BIS. This report proposes the development of a standardised methodology for measuring recycled PE content in packaging. This standardisation would be critical for producers, importers, and brand owners to meet their individual and industry-wide EPR obligations.

Scientific Methods for Accurate Measurement

The report, building on earlier research by CIPET's SARP-LARPM laboratory, recommends using FTIR spectroscopy and DSC-based thermo-analytical techniques to establish a national standard or operating/audit process. This scientific approach would help prevent green washing and waste fraud, ultimately strengthening public trust in plastic recycling initiatives.

Collaboration for a Circular Economy

The event also saw participation from government and industry representatives. Discussions covered various topics, including the current status of EPR implementation in India and the challenges faced by stakeholders in complying with EPR guidelines. Notable speakers included representatives from the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Bureau of Indian Standards, CIPET, and PPRDC.

Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future

The launch of this study report marks a significant step towards establishing transparency and accountability within India's plastic packaging sector. By promoting accurate measurement of recycled content, this initiative paves the way for a more sustainable future with a robust circular economy for plastics.
