Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for several significant projects, including a major investment by Sembcorp Industries. The Singapore-based company will invest Rs 362.38 billion to establish a state-of-the-art green ammonia plant in Thoothukudi. The facility, covering 160 acres in the key port area, will initially produce 200,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia annually for export to Japan. Front-end engineering and design work for the project has already commenced.

Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa expressed pride in the state's pioneering role in commercial green hydrogen production, noting, “Tamil Nadu will be the first State in India to roll out large-scale green hydrogen production.”

Earlier this year, Sembcorp signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu during the Global Investment Meet. Vipul Tuli, Chairman – South Asia and CEO – Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp Industries, highlighted Tamil Nadu’s renewable resources and investor-friendly policies, stating, “Tamil Nadu is a front-runner in realizing India’s green hydrogen ambitions. We are honoured to contribute to this historic effort, which unites India, Japan, and Singapore in advancing the global green hydrogen industry.”

Additionally, Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and Tata Technologies have collaborated to establish the Tamil Nadu Engineering and Innovation Centre (TN ENGINE) at Anna University’s Coimbatore campus. The Rs 4 billion facility will feature nine emerging technology labs, with the first phase setting up four labs equipped to support startups, MSMEs, and academia.

Minister Rajaa also highlighted the recent acquisition of land for the Kovai airport expansion project and the state's commitment to enhancing R&D in Coimbatore. He cited the swift progress of a previous MoU with Omron Healthcare, which quickly led to the establishment of a medical equipment manufacturing plant.

B. Santhanam, CEO, Asia Pacific and India Region, Saint-Gobain recalled the inauguration of their first factory by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi 24 years ago, which was a Rs 5.25 billion investment. He noted that Saint-Gobain has since invested ten times that amount, reflecting significant growth over the past two decades.
