Catamaran ventures into precision manufacturing start-ups

Catamaran, the venture capital firm founded by Infosys' Narayana Murthy, is set to diversify its investment portfolio by targeting precision manufacturing startups and companies engaged in exporting their products, according to a senior official from the firm. Speaking at the Digital Acceleration and Transformation Expo (DATE), Catamaran Chairman MD Ranganath mentioned that despite a decrease in valuation expectations for startups in India compared to 2022, ventures with sound business models and innovative ideas will continue to attract investments.

Ranganath highlighted the current focus of Catamaran on precision manufacturing, noting India's increasing appeal for manufacturing investments. The firm aims to invest in companies involved in deep tech and automobile manufacturing, particularly those capable of exporting products and creating components. Catamaran has previously invested in various companies such as SpaceX, Log 9 (a deep tech energy startup), udaan (B2B e-commerce), udemy (edtech), and Acko (fintech).

While acknowledging the overall decline in valuation expectations in the market compared to 2022, Ranganath emphasised Catamaran's confidence in their investments, attributing success to a focus on strong business models and the companies' relevance in the market.
