Bengal urged to boost electronic manufacturing for digital economy growth

With the expanding IT market in Bengal, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary, S. Krishnan, urged entrepreneurs to consider investments in establishing electronic gadget and semiconductor manufacturing units. Krishnan, during a meeting at the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and Industry with entrepreneurs, including MCCI President Namit Bajoria, emphasised the importance of digitisation in achieving self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat).

Encouraging entrepreneurs to initiate electronic goods production in the eastern region, especially in Bengal, Krishnan highlighted the current status of India's software and hardware industries, valuing them at $245 billion and $100 billion, respectively. He expressed the ambition to propel India's digital economy to reach a trillion dollars by 2030 and underscored the pivotal role of electronic gadgets in the digital transformation. Krishnan urged business entrepreneurs to explore opportunities for enhancing the manufacturing of these crucial devices.

While acknowledging the influx of IT players to Bengal, Krishnan also pointed out the need for the state to focus on manufacturing components, which are currently predominantly imported. He highlighted the growth in India's domestic cellphone manufacturing in the third quarter of 2018 and emphasised the importance of expanding the manufacturing base in Bengal to include these essential components.
