International Copper Association India (ICA) hosted a training cum workshop on ‘Emerging Trends for improving Energy Efficiency in Industrial Motors & its Driven Systems’ at National Productivity Council (NPC) in Ambattur, Chennai.

Sharing his views Abhishek Dhupar, Manager, Motor & Motor Driven Systems, ICA India said,” ICA has always been committed to improving energy efficiency across industries and we are pleased to partner with NPC to host this workshop. Through this workshop we aim to address some of the critical need-gaps and challenges faced by energy auditors and managers during implementation of newer technologies, upgrading older motor systems to newer, efficient designs and showcasing the savings achieved through these models.”

The guests of honour for the event, KVR Raju, Regional Director, AIP, NPC Chennai, delivered the inaugural address and said, “NPC has played a major role in promoting energy efficiency since the 1960s. Motors are the heart of any industry and therefore, are a key focus area when it comes to driving awareness around responsible energy consumption. We are pleased to partner with ICA and host the training at our facility, which will add value and benefit energy managers. We hope this will equip them with the necessary skills and know-how to bring about a positive change.”

Joel Franklin Asaria, Deputy Director, AIP, NPC Chennai said, “Motor and motor driven systems account for more than 70 per cent of total electricity consumption in industries. A recent survey highlighted that out of the total industrial motors, 83 per cent are small-sized, while 14 per cent are medium and large motors account for only 3 per cent. However, the larger motors consume the highest energy and account for 40 per cent of the total energy consumption. We believe there is a tremendous opportunity to improve energy efficiency in this segment. With this workshop, our endeavour is to empower energy managers to implement newer technologies that bring in greater efficiency, minimise losses and reduce overall costs.”

The initiative was aimed at educating energy auditors and managers, and equipping them with relevant knowledge to take informed decisions and implement energy efficient technologies as per industry standards. Experts from Siemens, Grundfos discussed topics such as higher efficiency motors (HEMs), improving energy efficiency in motor systems, etc. A practical training session was also held at NPC’s Centre for Excellence in Training for Energy Efficiency (CETEE) around various aspects of performance evaluation in motors, pumps, fans and compressors.

The summit was able to attract a diverse set of participants from NTPC, TUV India, M N Dastur, MRF & Shell India to name a few. Over 60 attendees from across the eco-system participated in the event.
