Adaptation of industry 4.0 is seeking more H&P systems

Nowadays, end consumers are looking for robust and reliable pneumatics hydraulics systems which are worth the money that is being paid. Due to a conspicuous growth in agricultural machines, specialised tractors, harvestors, municipal solid waste management, etc., hydraulic systems are moving in the realm of higher pressures, integration with electronic control systems, ease of operation, more compact in physical dimensions and other such requirements, observes Venkatesh Kamath, Senior Sales Manager, Poclain Hydraulics.

What type of products/services do you offer in the hydraulics and pneumatics space?
We, at Poclain Hydraulics, have been suppliers of hydrostatic transmission for mobile and industrial applications.

How is the hydraulics and pneumatics industry in India at present?
Due to the fact that infrastructure industries have seen the unabated spurt in growth, hydraulics and pneumatics (H&P) followed the
same growth.

Has the slow growth in industrial demand and dearth of new projects and investments in sectors like steel, power and infrastructure affected the pneumatics and hydraulics industry?
On the whole, hydraulics and pneumatics cater to a much wider variety of industries which in a given year always off sets fall in the growth of any one or two segments. For example, in 2018, if the demand for industrial (or stationary) drives have fallen, other sectors like defence, mobile, etc., grew creating the requisite demand.

Adoption of automation is increasing across industries. How is this helping the hydraulics and pneumatics industry?
Industries such as machine tools, forging, factory automation, adaptation of industry 4.0 are seeking more H&P systems.

Will opening up of the rail and defence sectors offer new business opportunities for the hydraulics and pneumatics industry in India?
With ‘Make in India’ picking up both in defence and railway, manufacturers are opting for supplies from the domestic industry. Railway, though at the nascent stage, will garner momentum in the coming decade creating additional demand for H&P systems.

Tell us about the new opportunities for companies in the hydraulics and pneumatics industry.
Large scale shift of mobile machine manufacturers from Europe and USA to India, with an intent to take advantage of low cost manufacturing base augurs well for the H&P industry. Growth in agricultural machines, specialised tractors, harvestors, etc. has seen demands for H&P systems. Municipal solid waste management is also seeking sophisticated and reliable systems which H&P can meet.

What are the emerging trends in hydraulics and pneumatics industry (in terms of new technology, changing customer demands, market dynamics, etc.)?
As in any other industry, consumers are demanding robust and reliable systems which offer value for the price they pay. Hydraulic systems are moving in the realm of higher pressures, integration with electronic control systems, ease of operation, more compact in physical dimensions and other such requirements.

What are the growth plans for your company?
Poclain Hydraulics has its manufacturing at Pondicherry with huge exports of drive motors to the global market. Smaller part is sold locally to Indian OEMs making mobile machines. We see a robust growth plan for India in the coming five years and more importantly the demand from customers seeking us enhance our local range to meet their demand is palpable. Our drive system demand grew by 30 per cent in 2018 over 2017, with larger proportion of customers reaching us from mobile, industrial and defence applications. For us, India growth story with our local plant has been helping us to stay well ahead of the average industry growth.
