Automation to drive female workforce into male-dominated manufacturing sector

As India aims to become a $35 trillion economy by 2047, the manufacturing sector is rapidly embracing automation, which is expected to enhance gender diversity and increase female recruitment, according to Subburathinam P, Chief Strategy Officer, TeamLease Services.

"With the phased adoption of automation in traditionally male-dominated sectors, we anticipate a rise in female hiring. Automation is facilitating a more inclusive work environment," Subburathinam told the source.

Currently, women make up only 15-20% of the manufacturing workforce in India. However, sectors adopting automation, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and telecom ancillary original equipment manufacturing (OEM), are actively working to recruit more women and aim for gender-balanced teams.

Challenges remain, including deep-rooted societal norms, a lack of diverse role models, and issues with work-life balance. Despite these hurdles, companies are implementing targeted policies to foster inclusivity.

Notably, the electronics sector has seen significant progress, with women comprising 70-80% of the workforce due to ongoing efforts to improve gender diversity. The textiles and apparel industries, traditionally employing more women, benefit from established practices. However, sectors like basic and fabricated metals, machinery and equipment, and automotive components are adopting automation more slowly, often due to harsh working conditions and entrenched industry practices.

The chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries, too, show a gender imbalance, with a predominance of male employees. As automation continues to advance, the hope is that these sectors will follow suit and contribute to a more balanced workforce.
