Coal India Ltd (CIL) has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL) to establish a 500 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, the company announced on May 5. The MoU was signed in Lucknow and also allows scope for future collaboration between the two parties.

This initiative marks another step by state-owned CIL toward diversifying into green energy to help meet the rising power demand in Uttar Pradesh. The agreement aligns with CIL’s broader strategy to expand into the renewable energy sector.

Last month, CIL had also signed a pact with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to set up a Rs 165 billion ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Jharkhand, emphasising its commitment to high-efficiency energy generation.

Coal India, which contributes over 80% of India's coal output, produced 62.1 million tonnes (MT) of coal in April 2025, nearly unchanged from 61.8 MT in April last year. In FY24–25, the company produced 781.1 MT, falling short of its annual target. For FY25–26, CIL aims to produce 875 MT and achieve an offtake of 900 MT.
